Strand: IT’S COMPLICATED

40 of the top 100 films at the U.S. box office in 2018 were led or co-led by womxn. That’s one of the findings of the Inclusion Initiative conducted at USC Annenberg. The study has examined gender and race on screen in popular films since 2007. In previous years this number hung somewhere between 20 and 33, so it seems that at last, we are moving in the right direction!

But what happens, when we look at who these actors portray? What are the leading roles offered to womxn? Are they mothers? Partners? Best friends?

IT’S COMPLICATED is trying to unpack this question and discuss the complex relationships among womxn on screen.

The three films in this strand move beyond some of of the typical roles womxn portray on screen. They feature strangers and activists, teachers and carers, protectors and allies. The strand also includes two special events.

  • In BORDERS we witness how four women form bonds through shared experiences and work together to assert their independence in a patriarchal society. (Book tickets for Friday, 21 February here.)
  • THE ARCHIVETTES chronicles the origin story of The Lesbian Herstory Archives in New York City and its strategies to preserve history. (Book tickets for Friday, 21 February here.)
  • A chance encounter between two indigenous womxn in THE BODY REMEMBERS WHEN THE WORLD BROKE OPEN triggers an intimate story about the aftermath of domestic abuse. (Book tickets for Sunday, 23 February here.)
  • The Open Forum Discussion invites you to look back at the films and their themes. Together we can draw connections between the characters on screen and talk about how we encounter such complex relationships in our own lives. (Book FREE tickets for Sunday, 23 February here.)
  • Our Womxn’s Networking Brunch offers an informal opportunity to meet fellow Glasgow-based creatives, filmmakers and feminists to chat about your experiences and what you’re working on. Please note, that this event is for womxn and non-binary folk only. (Book FREE tickets for Saturday, 22 February here.)
